![]() The suspects, Anwati McKenzie and Shannon Bowles, then fled. Two investigators had just left, and some uniformed officers were on their way to have lunch there, when two men walked in and shot Officer Haaf from behind several times. Officer Jerome Haaf was shot and killed 25 years ago as he was sitting in the Pizza Shack on Lake Street at 17th Avenue eating lunch around 1:45 a.m. On its Facebook page today, the Minneapolis Police Department remembered Haaf: It also ended the career in Minneapolis of Dave Dobrotka, the city’s deputy police chief who advocated working with the gang group over the objection of many rank-and-file cops. The coalition of gang members, United for Peace, organized under the auspices of The City Inc., and its leader, Spike Moss, died with Haaf and opened up a chasm within the city’s police department that remains to this day. The killing destroyed an attempt by Minneapolis politicians and police to work with gang members in the wake of the Rodney King beating in Los Angeles. Jerry Haaf was shot in the back at the Pizza Shack by members of the Vice Lords, retaliation for an incident a day before in which police picked up a blind man who evaded bus fare. North of Lake Street was controlled by Hispanic gangs - the Sereno 13s and Vatos Locos.Īfrican American gangs patrolled south of Lake - the Rolling 30’s Bloods, the Gangster Disciples and the Vice Lords. Park across the street in their private lot (next to a large condo/apartment complex look for the sign). It was 25 years ago Monday that an attempt to quell gang warfare in Minneapolis ended when a gang murdered a cop while he ate pizza during a break in his shift. In warmer months, they have outdoor seating on busy Lyndale Avenue. So you better hope that you liked the first one, coz there's no changing your mind. This is better than places that bring you two at once, but note that your second drink has to be exactly the same as the first you can't use the ticket for a different drink, even if it's cheaper than your original one. Then exchange your ticket for another one when you're ready. Happy hour is 2-for-1 drinks, with a ticket system. Go here for the pizza, not the sandwiches. They also have sandwiches, most of which are just OK but not great. Garlic cheese bread makes a good appetizer for the table, assuming your arteries can take all that cheese. The Potters is a great house combo, and is the Italian Stallion (recently added, and we hope it remains on the menu). Decent red sauce, lots of toppings options, respectable crust. Its the go-to place, for me, when I am in the area. When you walk in there on a normal night around 6pm, you will see families, crowding around giant slices of their perfectly made crust pizza and by 8pm, its just the calmer crowd, just wanting to watch the game or have a conversation with friends. The staff at Leaning Tower are so awesome-they are tentative without being overbearing, and know how to please their customers. Its at the heart of the 'artsy district', as I like to call it - in the heart of the Whittier neighborhood where young artists typically flock to rent apartments and hang out, its a really relaxed environment and perfect for any night of the week when you just want to relax. That place is the Leaning Tower of Pizza located at 2324 Lyndale Ave S, Minneapolis. ![]() But with a town that has so many small restaurants, it is hard to know where to start looking when you just want a simple, delicious slice of pizza, a cold beer, and the game on TV without hundreds of people flocking, flinging peanuts and being loud. And keeping with the area's wholesome Midwestern attitude, it should be that way. There are many little mom and pop-like places to eat in Minneapolis, MN.
